My name is Hannah Hansen and for the next 18 months I’ll be serving a mission in Lima, Peru for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! As a missionary I will be performing not only acts of service for the people in Peru, but I will also be teaching the people about Jesus Christ and His gospel. It gives me such excitement to think that I will have the opportunity to help everyone I come in contact with – whether or not they decide to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Sharing what we know to be true is something that is ingrained in nearly every human being. Whether it’s a delicious restaurant or a spiritual experience, we desire to share our experiences with others in hopes that they will find a similar joy or appreciation for the things we love. It’s not a matter of wanting others to follow your exact directions, it’s a hope that they may discover something new that can enrich their lives. Similarly, when members of the Church share a message of Christ, they are sharing something that is dear to their hearts and important to them. They’re sharing something that brings happiness and joy into their lives.
One of my favorite quotes reads, “Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” Spoken by the Buddha, these words remind us that not only is sharing an important part of humanity, but happiness also. Happiness and love are the vehicle through which we grow closer to those around us, and it is these emotions that make life so wonderful!
In the Book of Mormon we learn that “Men are, that they might have joy!” The Lord cares so much for each of us and not only wants us to experience joy ourselves, but for us to share it with each other. Not only does sharing with others bring us joy, but it also enhances our lives. When we share with others we become more knowledgeable, understanding, and patient. We come to understand so much more about the world around us and our own beliefs.
In Proverbs 3:13 it reminds us that “Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.” When we share with others we gain wisdom. Exchanging beliefs with those of different and similar faiths, we refine and strengthen our own beliefs while simultaneously understanding the beliefs of our fellow men.
I know that by embarking on this journey I will have the opportunity to not only share my own beliefs, but gain a new perspective and love for every individual I come in contact with. I am so grateful for this gospel in my life and I know that it is true. I’m so grateful for the family and friends that have given me so much support in this decision and I can’t wait for the experiences that lie ahead!
See you in 18!
