Wow this week Flew!! I can’t believe it is almost MAY and we will be having cambios this next week! I feel like I just got to Cañete and now everyone is telling me I’m probably going to have a cambio… I don’t believe it! Anyways, here is the rundown for the week…..
Pday- Beach day– This past Pday we got to go to Cerro Azul… The Beach!! It was so nice to get out, feel the sand and just have a nice beach day!
Power Out- On Sunday as we were leaving one of our lessons…. the Power went out!!! Now, when the power goes out in Peru, the Power is OUT.Almost our entire area was without power -and everything was pitch black!! We had to go back to our room and wait it out until the lights came back on and we could finish our nightly planning!
Finding Families- This week we had some wonderful experiences of finding new investigators. This whole cambio, my companion and I have been struggling to find new families to teach! However, this past week one of our recent converts gave us 2 refrences of families that lived in our area. After passing for both of the families a handfull of times- and never finding anyone… we had an impression to pass for their houses again and again. It’s amazing how as a missionary the spirit truly does work through you. Sometimes it’s just a thought or an impression, but when we follow it… we always find what we’re looking for! And this week was no different! After many days of passing by their houses we finally ended up finding and teaching two wonderful families this week! This really just helped remind me that when we keep trying, and ask for the Lord’s help, he will always, always help us!
Knowing People- These past few months we have been working with a less active member named Jenny! From my first lesson with Jenny, I felt such a spirit about her and such a friendship! It’s so crazy how sometimes you can meet a person and just feel such an instant friendship with them! Well, this past week Jenny has been going through some really difficult things with her family. As we were finishing off our lesson about faith and patience in the Lord, she turned to me and told me how grateful she was that I was here in Peru, serving her and her family. With a confused look on her face she told me that from the first lesson we had together she felt like she had known me for years! She felt this friendship, this happiness when we talked and she couldn’t believe we’d only known each other for 4 short months! It’s crazy how as missionaries we are truly put in specific places at specific times to help specific people! I am so grateful for this opportunity and the amazing people that I have the opportunity to meet and serve!
I love this work so much and know with all my heart that this gospel is true!!!
Love you all!!
I cannot believe another week has gone by!!! This week was filled with some hilarious experiences….. here’s a quick update!
Locked Out- In Peru, you don’t have normal trash days… instead a truck will drive down the street with a huge siren and everyone just runs outside with their garbage! So this week as we were doing our weekly planning, the siren went off and so like usual we rushed down to take out our garbage, but as we left our garbage outside, the wind closed the door and we ended up being stranded outside- no key- in our awful pajama-skirt- outfits….. After about 40 minutes of knocking and trying to find someone to let us in we found our landlord & a key!!! Of course we had to go back and document how ridiculous we looked… so enjoy the photos!
Lessons in Peru- In Cañete there is a lot of farmland nearby and so it is not uncommon to have chickens, ducks and other wildlife running throughout the house during lessons. Even with all this distraction, it’s amazing how you we can still focus on the people and truly feel the spirit so strongly! This even happened last week when I was inviting our investigators to pray and ask if the book of Mormon was true…as I was extending the invitation I saw out of the corner of my eye one of her little kids, peeing on the dirt floor in the kitchen!!! It was so funny I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself, and then continue on with the lesson…. that’s the life in Peru!!!
Changes! – I know I have said it before, but it is so amazing to see how the gospel changes lives!! We’ve now been teaching Alejandra for 3 months and it is amazing to see how she is just so much more happy! Seriously, when we first came to know her, she didn’t smile much and talked about how she always had a fear to talk to people or interact. And now, she is always smiling, and wanting to share her expeiences and life stories!!! We began to notice this even more as we taught a lesson on the importance of missionary work and service, it was amazing to see how touched she was by the scripture in D&C 18- 16 where it talks about how great the worth of souls is in the sight of God… after talking about how much joy she feels herself in the gospel, she mentioned that she wanted her friends and her family to feel this same joy she has experienced in her life. Not only did she talk about what she wanted to share, she acted!! Yesterday, Alejandra brought one of her friends to church with her, so he could feel this same joy she know has in her life! It’s truly amazing to see how the gospel brings so much light and happiness into our lives!!! It’s no wonder that when we share the gosepl, we feel such joy!!
love you all so much!!!
Wow the weeks always pass by so fast! Here is the update….
Bad Luck …- Those of you that have been reading my letters from the begining probably remember when I had an awful experience with a dog peeing on my foot. Well if I thought that was bad, this past week as I was waiting to cross the street I felt a sprinkling on my foot….. as I looked to my side I noticed a little kid PEEING ON MY FOOT!!!!! Seriously. I couldn’t believe it, first a dog and then a human. my companion and I were just dying laughing because it was so funny, disgusting, and well, hilarious.
Cooking in Peru! – This week I tried to be super creative and instead of just making my normal salad-sandwich lunch, I tried to be creative and make a padthai recipe…. as you can imagine It was a bit crazy. With our tiny electric stove and the realization that I had to disinfect everything first…. it was pretty interesting….. but ended up being delicious!
Miracles with Brinda!- We’ve been teaching Brinda since January and she has been progressing so well! The only problem was that Brinda is 14 and her mom wasn’t being supportive in her decision to join the church…. We had tried countless times to talk with her mom, but she just kept saying that Brinda wasn’ t ready.
But this past week we witnessed a miracle! As we were teaching Brinda and her mom, we decided to focus our entire lesson on Baptism and Jesus Christ. As we finished watching a short video of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, Luz, Brinda’s Mom had tears in her eyes. She finally understood the importance of Baptism, and even more importantly she could finally see that her daughter was ready. We talked about how Brinda was coming to church every week, Reading her Scriptures every day, and how she had a different light about her! Finally her mom’s eyes were opened and she saw what we saw… she saw that her daughter truly was prepared!!! Before we could even ask what day she wanted to be baptized her mom asked Brinda “When do you want to get baptized?…” Brinda was so shocked that after the lesson she asked us… “Did that really just happen? Did my mom say that I could get baptized?” It is amazing what the Spirit can do! That lesson was so wonderful, because the spirit was there and was helping Brinda’s mom to feel the joy and peace that comes from the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Kids in Church- One thing just totally hit me this Sunday. As I was looking around I noticed that there were more kids than usual in our Ward. And I began to think about how Children just have such a desire to learn and live the gospel. We’ve begun to teach a lot of young families and it always gets to me when the mom or dad doesn’t have time to read or pray, but their children have been praying everyday and have already read the chapter we left… Maybe that is why the Lord always tells us to come unto him as little Children. Because they listen to the Spirit and they desire to feel the peace that comes through Jesus Christ!
I love this work and I love this gospel!!! I feel so blessed to be her in Peru at this time!!!
Love you all!!
Wow!!! This week was wonderful!! I always love listening to Conference and Remembering the Savior on Easter… and what luck that we could do them both on the same day!!! Here-s a little rundown of what happened this week!!!
The Castle- Since I-ve arrived in Cañete I-ve wanted to go visit this old castle that is about 10 minutes from our area… and last week we finally went!!! It was so much fun to just walk around this old abandoned castle and take photos everywhere! One of the highlights was this underground passageway that led from different parts of the castle… as we were all walking through these dark hallways… seriously, there was no light anywhere…. we started to see things flying towards us… turns out the tunnels were invested with BATS haha and my whole zone went running…haha it was pretty crazy!!
Conference- Ahhh I just love conference!!! I always get so excited to listen to the Words of the Prophet and the apostles because I know that what they say is what the Lord wants to tell us at this time in our lives. Conference is especially wonderful in the mission because you not only listen to conference for yourself, but for all of the people you are teaching!!! This conference was especially exciting because all of our investigators that have Baptism Dates came to listen to the Sunday Morning Session!!!! It-s hard to describe the joy I felt as I saw each one of them enter the chapel to hear the words of the prophet!!! It was so amazing to share such a spiritual opportunity with the people I love and care for so much!! Also, it was so fun to ponder on each one of their needs and hear the answers to their questions in the words of the Lord-s Servants!!!
I Love this time of year because we get to focus on Christ and his ressurrection. I love how the Church doesn-t focus on the Death of christ as much as we focus on his Ressurrection. Because HE LIVES. Christ suffered and died for us, but he returned to live…. He was ressurrected. And because he broke the bands of death, We have hope, joy,.and infinite
opportunities now and forever.
I love this work and I know Christ is my savior and HE LIVES!!
Love you all!!!
