Week 42

Hola Familia!!!!!

Wow! The weeks just fly by!! …. even with this unbearable heat in Peru…. Apparently they don’t have fall…. just two summers….. Here’s a rundown of the week….
Californians- My new companion is the Best! It’s been a week filled with Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, french toast, and carmeled apples!! Seriously, it’s so fun having someone who understands what american comfort food is!!! It’s also so fun because we can just talk in ENGLISH. haha
Alejandra- Our investigator Alejandra is amazing!! She is progressing so well and we had such a wonderful lesson with her this last week! When we asked her how she was feeling during her prayers and scripture study, she shared with us that she feels a peace and calmness entering her life. She opened up to us and shared how alone she had felt these last few years. But how now she feels like she has a family through this Church and this Gospel! She feels that Jesus Christ is part of her life and that the members of the Church Care about her and Love her!! It’s so awesome how the gospel gives us so much strength and support to those that need it the most!
The Chris Hansen Iniciative- These last few weeks President Douglas (and even Elder Waddell) have talked a lot about the need to open your mouth and share the gospel! As missionaries we should be talking to each person we come in contact with, share a pass along card, or something so that they can know why we are here! (this especially applies for me as I am a white girl in Cañete) It’s so great because everytime I hear this council… I think about my dad! There was no one else better at striking up a random conversation than Chris Hansen. He didn’t have fears, doubts, and was never embarassed to share his beliefs. So this week I put a little personal goal… to be even more like my dad and talk with every single person I could! And wow, it was such a great week. We made so many contacts on the street, in combis (little bus things) and in resturants! Even though we didn’t have the chance to teach many of them,.or they didn’t live in our area, it was amazing how much closer to my father I felt, just by magnifying his example….Every time we share a smile or a conversation, we’re happier…and just imagine how much happier we are when that conversation is about the gospel of Jesus Christ…. Maybe that’s why my dad was always so happy… he was always talking!
I love being a missionary because I feel this happiness every single day. Each time I share my testimony it makes me realize how grateful I am to be here and how grateful I am that I know this gospel is true!!!
Love all of you!!!
Have a great week and try the “Chris Hansen iniciative” It will make you so much more happier… I promise!

Week 41

Hola Familia!!!

Wow okay this week was crazy!!!! Here’s a little rundown…
Emergency Cambios!! – On Monday at about 4 we got a call from President that we needed to be in the office the next day so my companion could catch her flight home!!! Apparently her condition was more serious than they had thought and she had to leave right away! It was crazy having to get everything together, but even more so was that I would recieve my new companion that very same day!!! My new companion is Hermana Haupt! She is from San Diego and she has just finished her first transfer in the mission, which means… that’s right… I’m Training again!!!! wooo hoo! She is so awesome and I forgot how fun it is to speak in English! Hahah She is so prepared to serve the Lord and her spanish is so good for only having a month and a half in the mission field!!!
Meeting with Elder Waddell!! – This past week we also had the chance to listen to one of the Area Seventies speak to us! President Douglas chose me to direct the music for the meeting so that was fun, and I totally tried to personify the “Cindy Hansen Chorister” look…. haha . It was such a great meeting which focused on our purpose as missionaries…. To Create Eternal Families!!! Everything we do as missionaries- Baptize, Rescue, Contact,Finding People to teach, Everything, is so that we can help families live together forever!
Prepared People!- Right now we are teaching this 18 year old mecanic named Jordan. Wow! He is so prepared it is insane! We found him because his Aunts and Uncles are members of the Church in a little city about an hour away from Imperial! As we began teaching him a few weeks ago,
it became more and more apparent to how prepared he was to hear the restored gospel! After teaching about the Plan of Salvation we invited Jordan to give the Closing Prayer…. now I love it when our investigators pray in lessons because 1. They start to exercise their faith in Christ 2.They Begin to really feel that God is their Heavenly Father and 3. We as missionaries get to hear what they are really thinking and what they really want to know….. And wow. As we stood outside of his mecanic shop… listening to the cars drive past, Jordan gave one of the most wonderful prayers I’d ever heard. He pleaded with his father in heaven that his family could someday live together forever, and that he could know that these things were true. In this moment I felt the spirit so strongly and began to think of how amazing it is that we can live with our families forever! That thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, this life is not the end and we can find true happiness here on earth and later on in the Kingdom of Heaven if we live the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Magda- This past week we visited a less active who we had heard was passing for some difficulties. As we saw her hobbling to the door, we realized that she needed more help than we had known. Magda, is about 70 and lives alone in a little one room apartment. She weighs about 80 pounds and is so sick and malnourished that she is unable to talk or even walk with ease. As we talked with her we realized that she hadnt eaten in a few days and didn’t have sufficent to eat. After sharing a short scripture with her, we went back to our house and brought her all food that we could, so that she could have something to eat for the next week! She was so grateful and began to cry, telling me how grateful she was for us and the love she had felt that day! As I held her limp hand and testified of God’s love for her, I truly began to feel how much God Cared and Loved her! It’s so heart wrenching to see how so many struggle in the things that we are just so used to …. like eating whenever we want. It really helped me to see how blessed I am and how important it is to do all we can to help and serve!!
Love you all and Love this work!!!
Have a great week!!!

Hola Familia!!!

This week has been a total rollercoaster!! Here’s a little bit about my week….

Getting to the Temple! – This past week we had such an amazing experience with one of or Rescates! We had invited Hna. Maria to come to the temple multiple times before, but she had always said no, or said she couldn’t because she was taking care of her granddaughter. But this past week my companion and I had to go to Lima for a doctors appointment and as we were walking past the house of Hermana Maria, my companion turned to me and told me…. Hna. Hansen, we have to invite Hna. Maria to come to the temple with us. At first I was doubtful, we didn’t have permission from president, she had turned us down 3 other times, and we would be leaving for the temple tomorrow morning and she didn’t have a reccommend. As I was focusing on all the details of the trip a voce came into my head saying …. just ask her. So we went, and asked, and wow, she said yes! It was amazing because she just called her daughter and told her that she would be going to Lima the next morning! After this we coordinated with of Branch President for an interview and miraculously he was available to do it in the next hour…. then we had the miracle of the pay phone. We were trying to call the temple to see if they would even have baptisms the next day…. we called every single number that we had- the only one that picked up was the cafeteria! After 30 min of dial tones we were so distraught- we had figured everything out and now the temple wouldn’t answer their phone! But as we were about to leave the pay phone, I suggested we say a prayer- we said a quick prayer together in front of that little pay phone and just asked that someone would pick up…. As you’ve probably guessed, the first number we dialed, they answered, and there were baptisms that we could go to the next day!!! As my comp hung up the phone I was just so filled with the spirit and was in awe of the power of prayer… I actually said out loud…. “wow, prayer really works!” haha Long story short, we got to go to the temple with Maria, She did 15 names from her own family, and she later told us that this was exactly what she had needed after weeks of trials in her own personal life. It was such a great learning experience for me also, because I realized that when we follow the promptings of the spirit, he will help us make the impossible, possible!

Opposition in all things- Even with our great trip to the temple with Maria this week was rough. My companion got diagnosed with endometriosis, and will need to go home at the end of this cambio. With this news, my companion has pretty upset and sad that she will have to leave after only having such a short time in the mission. It’s also been hard for me because I’ve had to be her support 24-7 an help her realize that God has plans for each of us. Sometimes we don’t understand the Why… but He does, and later on we will too! As I’ve been helping my companion through this hard time, I’ve also been reflecting on my own personal struggles in the mission. And I realized that I am so grateful for the Lord’s mindfulness of me. I can’t say that I am grateful that my father passed away, but I am grateful that I was here in the mission when it happened. The Lord knows what we need before we do, and I know that he put me here because he knew that the mission would be the best way for me to experience this hardship in my life. Everyday I feel the help and guidence of my father, and know that this is where I am supposed to be at this time in my life.

I love this work and I feel so blessed to be serving the people here in Cañete!
Love you all!

Week 39

Hola Familia!!!

Ahhh I was so upset that my letter from last week didn’t get there…. sometimes the internet here can be a little spotty 😦 but this past week went by just as fast as the rest! Here’s a little recap!
Members and Missionaries: Every Friday Hermana Amanda accompanies us from 4-9 without fail! Anyone who has served a mission knows this is incredible. One of the greatest supports members can give is when they accompany us for the lessons because then they get to know our investigators and help them feel loved by the members…. not just the missionaries. As most of our appointments had fallen through we decided to pass for one more appointment before Amanda would go home. We went to visit william, he is about 15 and his aunt is a member. Moments after we began the lesson his father arrived… now we had heard a lot about how his father was a little “rough around the edges” but after telling us he didn’t want to listen, he sat down and began to listen. haha . It’s crazy how the Spirit truly does open the hearts of those we teach. Because in 40 min Juan changed from not wanting anything to do with the Church, or religion in general, to wanting to read The Book of Mormon and find out if it was true! He began to feel the spirit, and feel a desire to change…. What was even more rewarding of this experience was that Hermana Amanda shared this story with Relief Society and talked about how amazing it was for her to witness such changes. As she shared her testimony and her thoughts about the lesson with Juan and William, it dawned on me how amazing it is to be a missionary. We don’t just get to see these changes and feel this spirit one day a week, but we have the gift of partaking in this great oppotunity every day!
Chosen Families! – Wow! When my companion and I find new families to teach it is amazing. Because not only do we see them as a family that can one day be baptized together, but that one day they can be sealed together for all time and eternity! Wow! This week we truly saw one of the new families we are teaching dressed in white!!! After a long day of walking and contacting… I had an impression to visit a woman that I had talked to a few weeks back but had not shown too much interest. As we followed my impression, we ended up finding Maria with her husband uber and  there daughter all together, practically waiting for us to come and teach them! The lesson we had was incredible. Uber was so dedicated to finding out if the message we had shared was true!! I just cannot wait to teach maria and uber about Eternal families!!!
I love this work and I love these people!!! Thank you for all your prayers and love!!! I feel them everyday!!! I love this gospel and testify that it is True!!!
love you all!!

Letter from Hannah March 2, 2015

Hola Familia!!

This week went by sooo fast… I can’t believe it is already March! Anyways, here’s an update on my week!
Luz! – Wow this week we had an amazing lesson with a new investigator named Luz! She is absolutely incredible. About 5 years ago she started to feel unusual pain in her body, so she decided to go to the doctor. After telling the doctor about her pain, she passed out, was in a coma for 15 days. What followed was unbelievable, I’m not sure the name of her sickness, but she now is in a wheelchair, her toes have been amputated, and she has a hole in her treachea to help her with her breathing. The most remarkable of all things is that through all her sickness and pain, she always trusted in God and kept her faith strong and alive. We found Hermana Luz through her daughter. As we were passing by to visit her daughter, Luz answered the door and invited us to come in and share our message. Wow…. the spirit was so strong as we testified of Jesus Christ and how he felt every single pain, sickness, and sadness that she has ever felt. It was incredible because for the first time ever Luz felt like there was someone who knew her pain, someone who had experienced the things she had gone through…. after reading a few scriptures she finally said, ” So Jesus Christ knows… nobody knows… but he does.” It’s crazy how much comfort this small knowledge can give us…. that even through all our trials and pains, Christ knows. And because he knows, he can give us the strength we need to move forward, and find happiness in our lives!
The Restoration- Another amazing moment that happened this week was as we watched the short film, the restoration. Wow. the spirit was so strong as we  watched Joseph Smith search to find his answers and later, recieve the answers that would change his life and the lives of so many! As we finished the video my companion began to cry as she told us how watching this movie for the first time as a missionary was one of the most profound experiences she had, had in the mission. As we bore our testimonies that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and that we really and truly have the Chuch of Jesus Christ here on the Earth today… it became so clear to me why this short film has so much more significance now in my life than it did about 9 months ago. It is because now I not only believe and know that these things are true, but every day I testify that there is a prophet of God on the Earth and that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is True! It’s become a part of my everyday, a part of who I am! And I will tell you, it is amazing! That everyday we have the opportunity to share this piece of happiness, piece of hope with everyone that we meet!
I just love being a missionary and I just love this gospel!
Love you all!
